About
Since 2007 I’ve been DIT’ing and camera assisting on Red Camera productions working on music videos for the likes of Oasis and The Feeling as well as around one hundred commercials for companies such as Sky, MTV, Virgin, Nintendo and many other house hold names. I’ve also been involved with short films for the likes of Amnesty International and many independent directors and producers. My role has varied between Camera Assistant and Digital Imaging Technician, focussing mainly on the Red One Digital Cinema Camera.
For the last year or so I’ve been researching stereoscopy, or the art of 3D movie-making. There’s an immediacy about 3D that makes it very enjoyable to learn and a craft that can, if done well, offer an audience something different and hopefully special. Of course it’s not for everyone and nor should it be. In many ways 3D could be thought of as a style. Just as a film-maker may choose to shoot black and white over colour, or film over digital, 3D simply offers another way of encompassing a story for an audience.
The technical aspects of 3D make it something that needs an attention to detail and perhaps this is what attracted me to it the most. Being able to offer a service that requires a great degree of skill is important to me. In the near future I hope to direct and stereograph my own short films combining CGI and live action in stereo 3D. My ambitions beyond this are to be involved with feature films specifically focussing on 3D movie making.
This website represents articles about Digital Cinema and Stereoscopy. In the coming months it is my aim to build a side-by-side 3d rig as well as a beamsplitter rig to house the upcoming epic and scarlet cameras from Red. The small form factors of the camera, weight and ability to break down the cameras to their component parts makes them ideal in my mind for creating both types of rigs. I will be posting articles that relate to my work over this period and hope others will find the information useful. I intend to post designs and features from my rigs and look forward to any suggestions or collaberations.
